The Story & Meaning of Unraiji Temple

The name of Unraiji Temple comes from a passage in the Lotus Sutra, in the chapter known as “The Parable of the Medicinal Herbs.”
The clouds gather, thunder begins, and rain falls to nourish all things. When the clouds part, brilliant light begins to shine through.
This natural cycle reflects a journey of nourishment, renewal, and hope — a reminder that after every moment of stillness or change, light returns.
The name Unraiji Temple carries this wish within it.
With a history of more than 400 years, Unraiji Temple has stood in Osaka since the Tenshō period (1573–1591). The temple was later relocated to its present site in Nakadera, Osaka, in 1598.

Today, this enduring spirit of nourishment, renewal, and light continues to inspire the experience at WA-THAI.

Yomogi — a Japanese herbal tradition

Yomogi, known as Japanese mugwort, has been familiar to people in Japan for generations. Its distinctive fragrance and seasonal character have made it part of everyday life in many forms.

Traditionally enjoyed in Japanese sweets such as yomogi mochi and yomogi tea, yomogi has also been used in moxibustion, herbal baths, skincare, and other traditional practices. As a plant valued in Japanese food and culture, yomogi also contains a variety of vitamins, minerals, and other naturally occurring nutrients.

At WA-THAI, we bring this familiar herb into our cultural experiences through yomogi herbal foot baths and foot steam — connecting a simple Japanese tradition with a moment of rest and wellness.
